Hierapolis Ancient City is an ancient city located in the west of Turkey, in the region known as Pamukkale today. Hierapolis was founded in the Hellenistic period and gained great importance during the Roman Empire. The city was destroyed by a major earthquake in the 17th century AD but was rebuilt in the following centuries.
Hierapolis Ancient City was particularly important as a center for health and spa tourism. The thermal pools formed by the hot springs in the ancient city attract visitors. In addition, the important structures in the ancient city include the Great Theatre, Nymphaeum (fountain), Agora (assembly area), the northern necropolis, and Plutonion (underground temple). Furthermore, Hierapolis Ancient City is also important for Christian history.
